Make Up Week Recap

The Turbo Bocce season is 10 (three games sets) long, but being the generous chaps we are, we give you 12 weeks to play 10 times, thus there are two “make up weeks” built into the season. The first always falls on the week of 4th of July, and the second falls on the last week of the regular season, which will be August 9th this year.

That makes this week special for two reasons . . .

Number one, its a make up week.

Number two, ‘Merica!

Its now been 16 days with zero measurable rain in Syracuse, so the field is pretty dry and the league must adjust to the changed playing conditions. Some teams do better at adjusting than others. Usually the people who prefer to roll the ball do better in dry weather than the people who prefer to toss the ball, but not always. The people who played in last weekends sand bocce tournament had to adjust from no roll to lots of roll. Not all of them did so, but others adjusted quite well.  The only way to know for sure who thrived under the dry conditions is to read the recap.

Not everybody needed to play a game during the make up week, but some of those people whose teams were all caught up on games stopped by just to have fun and get some practice in.  Here is video of Andy Ingalls of Amerika’z Most Wanted and Scott Mead of Big LaBocce practicing.  Watch out for those two.

Despite it being a make up week some crucially important games were played.

Ranking teams by BCS always comes with the capacity to surprise, because it takes into account opponents winning percentage. So if the team you played week 1 happens to have a bad week in week 6 it will hurt your BCS. Because of that, you never quite know for sure where teams will fall in the rankings. Last week, for example, I was sure Mark & Robb were going to top the league because they were in second place, they beat another top team, and the first place team Black Jesus took a loss. But it didn’t turn out that way, because just about every team Mark & Robb played all year also lost in week 6, sending their strength of schedule down just low enough to allow Black Jesus to hold on to first place despite the loss.

Lets just get it out of the way now, Black Jesus did not hod onto their first place spot this week. Colin and Mike of Droppin Balls made sure of that with three blow out wins (11-5, 11-3, 11-7) against the reigning champs. Droppin Balls has been a top team for years, so I suppose they were due for a break out game like this after their slow start to the season, but seriously, what a way to break out. Colin Donahoe lead the way with 20 points, and Droppin Balls rocketed up the standings – from bottom half of the league to top 10 in one week!

With the first place team going down, it only seems appropriate that the second and third place teams happened to play each other, which is exactly what happened when Ralph Bocce-O and Mark & Robb matched up. The first game was everything you’d expect it to be, with Ralph Bocce-O winning in overtime 12-10. The third game was nothing like you’d expect it to be, with Ralph Bocce-O winning 11-2. Mark & Robb won the second game 12-7, but of course Ralph Bocce-O won the series, and shots like this one by Matt Foster are what did it for them.

So with Ralph Bocce-O winning against the second place team and the two teams ahead of them losing, you’d think Ralph Bocce-O would go into the week in first place . . . but no. Mark & Robb got the boost this week that they didn’t get last week (partly from Droppin Balls winning all three games) and they nudged into first by an ever so small percentage . . . three-hundredths of a percent to be exact. The margin is so small that if Ralph Bocce-O wins all 3 games in the week they have to make up they will take over first (depending of course, on what happens with strength of schedule which is ever changing).

I have a feeling the regular season title is going to come down to the very last week again this year!

Last week it was over 90 degrees during bocce, so I think its time for a heat index. Make Bocce Great Again is making themselves great again. After a 2-7 start to the season they are now in the middle of a 7-2 run. So while they are only 9-9 on the season, don’t let the record fool you, they are red hot! They also happened to be playing in the bounty game this week.

Make Bocce Great Again took on Some Innuendo who had an impressive 8-1 record, but who might be a little rusty due to missing the last two weeks because of a non-bocce related injury. The first game was tight and required overtime to settle, but Some Innuendo did not forget their winning ways, ultimately emerging with the 13-11 victory on the back of shots like the one Julie made below.

Make Bocce Great Again came back strong in the second game with an 11-2 win, then showed just how hot they are by giving Some Innuendo their first series loss of the year, by winning the third game 11-7.  Congrats to Make Bocce Great Again, on their bounty win, and great bocce.

The Deep Vee’s took on Double A’s in a game of extremes. The first game looked a lot like this . . .

Shots like that one by  Brian Roy helped The Deep Vee’s won 11-1, unfortunately for them, things got more difficult. The next two games looked more like this . . .

With Double A’s winning the last two 11-1 and 11-3.  The Double A’s are one of those teams I suspect will benefit from the dry conditions.  I’d bet on them going on a winning streak.

Onto individual accomplishments.

If you didn’t see your stats you can check the stats for every team and person in the league HERE.

If you don’t stay after bocce and join us for a drink, you should, lots of fun stuff happens. Also there are awards to be won! Make sure you find Phil Martino after bocce each night because he’s going to be giving out the George Christou award for distinguished drinking every week.

This week the George Christou award goes to Robb Jones. I’m not sure exactly what he did to earn the award, but I’m sure he saved millions of innocent lives through drinking . . . or something like that.

One piece of advice to hold you over until next week . . . you can make millions designing a better dishwasher. Right now I’m hand washing every dish just to then load it into the dishwasher. That’s a pretty major design flaw. They don’t even deserve to be called dishwashers, really, they should be called, dish just-in-casers because I’m only using them just in case I didn’t clean the dishes good enough enough by hand. What someone needs to invent are kitchen cabinets that you put your dishes in dirty after you use them, then push a button and BAM they get cleaned, and they are already away in the cabinet where the belong. Million dollar idea for you! You’re welcome.
